ALS. Three letters to describe a horrific disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive neurological disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Nerve cells, or motor neurons, carry messages from the brain to the motor neurons in the spinal cord and then out to the muscles of the body. Basically, your brain sends the message “walk” to your spinal cord and the muscles in your legs move you forward. Except when the messengers break down, the brain has no way of sending that message. The brain knows what it wants the body to do, but it cannot get the message out.

There is no cure. Yet. But through strides in research there are glimmers of hope. That’s where we come in. Doing something like dumping a bucket of ice water on your head might seem silly, but to the friends of someone struggling with ALS or to the families that have watched their loved ones lose the battle, it offers some comfort. Research cannot progress without the funds to move it forward, so take the challenge and nominate someone else to do it, too! And why a bucket of ice you may ask? Hear it from the man who started the viral trend.
