When it comes to pallet racking systems, hanging dividers are a simple solution to ensure accessibility to product, organization, and safety. In this post, we take a look at what a hanging divider is, and accomplishes in pallet racking systems.

What is a hanging divider?

Hanging dividers are what they say they are! They typically hang down from wire decking to divide and organize products on the bays of pallet racking that sit beneath a given level. They can be included in new pallet rack applications or easily added to existing racking.

What are my layout options when it comes to hanging dividers?

Layouts are typically from front-to-back or left-to-right. Their most common use is to separate and organize products – typically smaller SKU numbers. The left-to-right layout serves as a barrier for boxes being pushed off the back of a level and divides areas for pick locations accessed from both sides of the pallet rack.

What are some features and advantages of hanging dividers?

The biggest advantage of hanging dividers is the ease-of-installation. As we mentioned, they simply hang down from an existing piece of wire decking. Installation and implementation takes minutes on smaller applications, with minimal time invested in larger applications as well.

Another feature of hanging dividers is the added safety it brings to a pallet rack application. As mentioned, the left-to-right applications are designed to keep products from going off the back of the decking. This also serves to keep flue spaces clear.

We addressed flue spaces in a prior blog post, but for a refresher, flue spaces are clear vertical lines of sight from the floor up to the ceiling within rack storage areas. In short, they allow upward ventilation in the event of a fire instead of across multiple bays of racking. This also allows sprinkler systems to contain or extinguish a fire, and in many jurisdictions, there are legal requirements for flue spaces that hanging dividers help meet.

Are there alternatives to hanging dividers that I could consider?

Sure! There are several options that serve similar purposes including clip-on dividers, pallet rack backing, and flue space dividers. Installation for these items is not typically as quick or easy as a hanging divider but is still smooth (minimal hardware, clipping, and mounting) nonetheless.
