Pallet Rack Baseplates

This week’s #RackArt image is a cool perspective of a Ridg-U-Rak Pallet Racking baseplate, also referred to as a foot plate. What is so important about a baseplate? You could also ask what is so important about having feet. If your legs stopped at your ankles, standing upright while holding a number of parcels would be a tricky deal. It works the same with pallet rack.

What is a Baseplate?

Baseplates are metal tabs that are factory installed at the bottom of the column post. They have predrilled holes that accept anchor bolts for securing to the warehouse floor.

How is the Size Determined?

The size of the baseplate is determined by factors such as rack height, capacity loads and seismic forces. Engineers should always review the pallet rack design to be sure the proper baseplate is specified, taking particular care when dealing with seismic locations. In reference to the design of the baseplate, an increase in the thickness, footprint and number of anchor points, provides an increase in strength and stability to the system.

When is a Baseplate Not Enough?

In a perfectly level environment the baseplate can do it’s job independently – but not all warehouse floors are leveled to perfection. If that is the case, a shim can be called in for backup. A shim is a metal plate with the same footprint as the baseplate that helps to level the rack system if it is being installed on an irregular surface. Shim sizes are determined by what size and type of footplate is being used.

Why are Baseplates Necessary?

Baseplates are a necessary component of pallet rack systems because they anchor the pallet rack to the warehouse floor. They create a safe and stable system by disbursing the weight of the rack down into the floor. Baseplates also keep the racks from moving, leaning and tipping. Although baseplates are not required for all types of pallet racking, all systems can benefit from the extra stability and peace of mind that they provide.
