Interlake and Mecalux were once two separate companies. In March 2009, Mecalux acquired the companies UFC Interlake Holding Co., United Fixtures Company Inc., and Interlake Material Handling Inc. This allowed an already global Mecalux to develop its American market, adding three new production plants in the United States. 

Before its integration with Mecalux, Interlake was its own company, born in 1929 when By Products Coke Corporation, Zenith Furnace Company, and Toledo Furnace Company combined under the new name “Interlake Iron Corporation.” Interlake introduced slotted angle and expanded its roll-formed steel production in 1954, beginning its storage and rack system offerings.

In 1964, Interlake Iron Company merged with the prominent and extensive Acme Steel Company, forming Interlake Steel Corporation. The joining of these two brands resulted in the 11th largest completely integrated steel company in the US. From there, the business grew and expanded and underwent multiple ownership changes before ultimately being purchased by Mecalux in 2009.
