Used Pallet Rack: “Sold as components, no warranty applies”

Scenario:
Customer calls and asks the following: Do you have used? This is a very challenging question for anyone that is not a stocking distributor of Used Pallet Rack. The key objective here is to find out why they are looking for used which could be for a number of reasons including the below.

#1. Price – They are on a budget and immediately assume that used is going to be the lowest price.
#2. Brand or Style – They may currently have some used or a particular brand that is no longer available.
#3. Immediate need or not really sure what is available.

So here comes the fun part!  Anytime a customer asks for used when adding to an application, it’s important to state the following:

We recommend that any used systems be matched up with the correct manufacturer. The reason being for this is that the warranties do not apply when mix matching manufacturers.  All design and engineering is done with the same matching components. When you mix components, you are creating a liability.  If there is a failure, you do not have any documentation that mixing the brands holds the stated capacity.  This creates a potential dangerous situation.

The best case scenario is to combine your old racking and start fresh with a new section. Its always great to offer two options as the customer may be surprised that in some cases the used is higher cost vs the new. But, until you actually offer them two quotes, its difficult to understand how this would work.

If you are going to offer the components together with different manufacturers, you want to make sure to state “Sold as components, no warranty applies”.
